Bahamas by boat: where time slows down and the sea becomes home

The Bahamas are the dream of those who imagine a holiday made up of turquoise waters, white beaches and coral seabed. An immense archipelago, made up of hundreds of islands and cays, which offers a rare sensation: that of having space, silence and intact nature around. A boat holiday in the Bahamas is the most authentic way to experience them, because it allows you to move between hidden bays, strips of sand and almost deserted islands, choosing a new horizon every day.

The Bahamas are located in the Atlantic, between Florida and Cuba, and combine spectacular nature and lively culture: music, parties, crafts and a mix of African, British and American influences. It is a perfect destination for those seeking relaxation, but also for those who love snorkelling, diving and light adventures, with that Caribbean flavor that remains with you.

Why choose the Bahamas for a sailing holiday

There is a reason why the Bahamas are considered one of the most iconic sailing destinations: here the sea seems designed to experience slow, bright, essential days. Between a short crossing and an anchorage in the harbor, you often find yourself faced with scenarios that seem unreal: transparent seabed, coral reefs just a few meters away, strips of sand that emerge with the tide.

By boat, the Bahamas become a “private” archipelago: you avoid the frenzy of the most crowded spots, you choose your times, you live the experience with total freedom. It is the ideal trip both for those who want to rent a sailing boat or a catamaran, and for those who prefer a catamaran cruise with a ready-made organisation.

Bahamian food and wine is a delicious fusion of flavors that reflects the rich cultural diversity of the archipelago. Bahamian cuisine, influenced by African, British and American traditions, offers a variety of dishes that satisfy every palate. One of the key elements of the cuisine is seafood. The surrounding waters are rich in marine delicacies, such as lobsters, crabs, shells and, of course, fresh fish. “Conch salad,” a fresh sea shell salad marinated in citrus and local spices, is a popular delicacy that captures the flavors of the ocean. Another iconic dish is “cracked conch,” where sea shell meat is dipped in a light batter, fried and served with spicy sauces. This reflects the British influence in the preparation of fried foods. The “rock lobster,” or Bahamian red lobster, is a popular specialty. Prepared grilled or baked with garlic butter, it represents an extraordinary culinary experience. Traditional Bahamian feasts often include dishes such as “guava duff,” a sweet dessert made from local guava fruit and served with a sweet sauce. “Johnnycake,” a sweet bread made from corn or wheat flour, is a common accompaniment to meals. The drinks are no different. The “Sky Juice,” a cocktail made with gin, coconut milk and seasonings, is a refreshing drink perfect for the tropical climate. Local markets and restaurants also offer a wide range of international dishes, giving visitors the opportunity to explore global flavours. Bahamian food and wine is a culinary journey that celebrates the diversity and freshness of local ingredients, offering an unforgettable gastronomic experience. Bahamian hospitality is a warm embrace that welcomes visitors into a world of kindness and human warmth. The people are friendly, open and eager to share the beauty and joy of their corner of paradise with visitors. In every encounter, you experience hospitality through small gestures of kindness and attention to detail. From recommendations for hidden places to explore to spontaneous invitations to participate in local festivities, every moment is an opportunity to connect with the culture and generosity of the Bahamas. Discover an authentic and warm welcome that will make you feel not just a guest, but an integral part of the extraordinary Bahamian family. Welcome to a world where hospitality is an art and every smile is an invitation to live a unique and unforgettable adventure.

“Bahamian” experiences, perfect on a boat

Among the most popular destinations to include on the route are:

  • bays and beaches with very clear sand such as Cable Beach and Pink Sands Beach (Harbour Island),
  • seabed and coral walls in Andros, ideal for those who love diving and underwater caves,
  • Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island, a legendary place for those seeking out-of-the-ordinary underwater scenery,
  • the islands and cays of the Exumas, with stages that alternate pure nature and small equipped marinas.

And then there are those experiences that make this archipelago unique: mangrove canals to explore by kayak, uninhabited islands where you can stop for lunch in the harbor, and stops in nature reserves where biodiversity is the protagonist.

Food, wine and hospitality: the flavor of the islands

Bahamian cuisine is a rich and straightforward mix, often built around the sea. The signature dish is conch (conch salad, cracked conch), together with lobsters, crabs and fresh fish. Local classics also include johnnycake and traditional desserts such as guava duff, while tropical cocktails perfectly complete evenings at anchor.

The hospitality in the Bahamas is one of the great reasons why we return: open smiles, small gestures, spontaneous advice and that feeling of being truly welcomed. It is a welcome that can be felt in the markets, in the marinas and on the smaller islands, where the journey also becomes an encounter.

Why choose the Bahamas by boat

Because it is the only way to truly experience the archipelago: bays that can only be reached by sea, incredible snorkeling, small and “private” islands, days marked by the light and the tide.

Experiences not to be missed

Snorkeling on a coral reef, explorations among mangroves in a kayak, strips of sand at sunset, nights at anchor under a sky full of stars, stops between cays and marine parks.

What to know before leaving

High season in high demand: book early. Bring high sun protection, a garment for the evening breeze and beach accessories (mask/snorkel if you prefer them personal). Ideal for both a catamaran and a sailing boat.

How to get there and practical advice

The Bahamas can be reached by plane with international flights, often via London or Miami.
